ECON 101 – 70: Intermediate Microeconomics

Course Description: This course covers the basic elements of microeconomic theory including consumer choice, the impact on resource allocation of different market structures ranging from competition to monopoly, game theory, general equilibrium analysis, and asymmetric information. We will focus on equilibrium and optimization throughout.

 

Course Methodology: Using the models from neoclassical microeconomic analysis, we will study consumer and producer behavior as well as the market structures within which they interact. You have already studied these concepts in principles of microeconomics, but we will be doing so in much greater depth and with significantly more rigor, particularly with the use of calculus.

 

Prerequisites: ECON 001, ECON 002 and MATH 035 or MATH 02-

Course Requirements:

 

The course requirements are listed below:

 

1.   Problem Sets: Six (6) problem sets will be assigned each worth 6 points. The lowest grade will be dropped. Working problems is really the only way to learn the material in this course. They are intended to be learning exercises as well as opportunities to review important concepts discussed in the lectures and assigned readings. The assigned problem sets must by handed in and the due date/time is indicated for every assignment. Late work will not be accepted (do not ask the TA to violate this rule). One problem set grade will be excused (not counted toward your grade).

 

2.   Exams: There will be two midterm exams worth 50 points each on the date specified on the course outline. The final exam is worth 60 points and will be cumulative.

 

 

 

3.   Class Participation: Class Participation is worth 10 points. You are expected to attend and participate in all class meetings. Attendance will be taken and counted towards your class participation grade. Unexcused absences will negatively impact your participation grade.
